Be sure to bring cash for the passport photos, the Embassy web page does not say you need cash for those. They are about 1600 Colones. They do accept cards for payment for the passport services.Make sure you do not bring any purses, bags, cell phones, just papers, a pen, and your car key, etc.Processing my passport renewal was quick and easy, the line was short for American Citizens. They will give you your current passport back while you wait for your new one which is nice to be able to keep it while they process your renewal. There is no parking but you can park in Rohrmoser Plaza and walk down there are also other stores parking spaces you can park in. The plaza directly across from the Embassy on Via 104 is restricted parking but on the side on Calle 98 across from La Favorita gas station, I found a spot to park.

Our passports were stolen with our luggage out of our rental car while visiting Costa Rica. We went to the embassy with nothing more than the shirts on our back. They treated us well, making us feel welcome and giving us priority over the local people there. We got to speak with American personnel right away and left 2 hours later with emergency passports in hand. We felt like VIPs the whole time. The only criticism we had was that all the police and security officers inside the embassy were Costa Rican. It would have been nice to see some Marines or American security contractors inside. After being robbed in Costa Rica it would have helped us feel more secure. I guess the mental image of America Marines with M4 rifles waiting at the gate is the stuff of movies...but it would have been nice :)

Worse experience at an embassy by far! They misinform you over the phone (if you are lucky enough to speak to a person) than tell you something totally different at the location. Rude and unprofessional and totally disgusted by the services provided overall

Every time you try to call because you have questions regarding a visa they redirect you to a phone number that is just a recording with some instructions, once you listen to ALL the instructions THAT YOU ALREADY KNOW BECAUSE ITS ON THEIR PAGE they automatically hang up the call so you never get the chance to talk to a representative, esencially, if that dumb recording answered your questions good for you, if not, you’re screwed.

Worst experience at an embassy! I have been through hell and back trying to get my fiancé’s case transferred to an embassy they make go for a pre interview to even see if they will take his case. When it was time for the interview they conditionally approved visa despite over 100 pages of relationship evidence. They are demanding him to get a single status certificate. He is not from Costa Rica and their government refuses to give it to him. I emailed the embassy they said that is fine and just submit whatever give as the reason they won’t. He did and now they are saying that isn’t allowed and he must get it. how is he suppose to get it when he isn’t from there! I’m so glad as the first experience my fiancé gets of America it is this contradicting embassy! I will never recommend Costa Rica or this embassy to anyone. Because of this mess my fiancé is going to miss our wedding. Truly frustrated.

(Translated by Google) All very well, I went to get the visa to go to Orlando Florida, all very well, but I do not give it 5 stars, because, they fuck a lot with the security(Original)Muy bien todo, fui a sacar la visa para ir a Orlando florida, todo muy bien, pero no le doy 5 estrellas, ya que, joden mucho con la seguridad

I have worked with many consulates in the past 20 years and this is the absolute worst. Forget being able to talk to a person because you need an appointment. But they don't answer phones so you can make on. Use the web site and they may answer in 15 business days. Can not leave messages by phone or email. You can't go there personally because they won't let you in without an appointent. Government at its finest. Pray you never need them in a hurry.
